Poker terminology

All in - When a player bets all of their chips.

Flop - The first three community cards that can be used by anyone to make up their best five card hand.

Turn - Also known as fourth street. This is the fourth community card placed face upwards on the table.

River - Also referred to as fifth street. This is the fifth community card placed face up on the table. It’s amazing how much difference just this one card can make to the entire hand.

Button - This is the dealer chip placed in front of the dealer of a particular hand. Someone on the button is said to be in the best position, as they get to see what all of the other players do before they have to make a decision.

Ante - A pre-set amount that all players must bet before any cards are dealt. In Texas Hold’em this is usually used only in tournament play, when the blinds have increased somewhat first (see big blind).

Small blind - A forced bet that the player to the left of the dealer has to make before any cards are dealt.

Big Blind - A forced bet that the player to the left of the small blind has to make before any cards are dealt. The big blind is usually double the small blind. During a poker tournament, the blinds will increase periodically, and will usually keep doing so until the tournament comes to an end.

The nuts - This is the best possible hand at any given time. For example, if you hold J9 and flop hits 8 10 Q, then you have flopped the nuts. If the turn card is a K however, the nuts would then be AJ. The nuts can change dramatically as a hand unfolds.

Bad beat - This is when a hand that is expected to win gets beat by a large underdog. This can be extremely annoying!

Big Slick - A nickname for the poker hand AK (of any suit). It is named after a famous poker player - John Wilcox (nicknamed Big Slick), who's favourite hand for knocking out opponents was AK.

Burn - When a card from the top of the deck is placed face down. This is done before dealing the next community card(s). It is done to help prevent players from recognising or catching a glimpse of the next community card.

Buy-In - This is the amount of money you have to pay to enter a tournament.
